Is my game server being DDoSed?

Intro

Everyone dropped at once, but the server looks fine? It might be a DDoS attack, or just lag. Here's how to tell.

The signs

The signs of a DDoS: every player drops at the same moment, it goes from fine to unreachable in seconds, and CPU and RAM look completely normal.

Timing & traffic

The timing is suspicious too. Right on a wipe, an event, or just after a ban or an argument. And the network graph shows a wall of incoming traffic.

Or just lag?

Ordinary lag looks different. You can usually see a cause, like high CPU, a heavy plugin, a bad mod, or one player on a poor connection.

In the moment

In the moment: don't reinstall the server, it does nothing against network traffic. Never fight back with a booter, that's illegal. Tell your host, and never share your raw server IP.

The lasting fix

The only lasting fix is always-on filtering, so attacks are absorbed before they reach your server, and your players never notice.

Recap

Same moment, healthy server, flooded network. Protected game server hosting at esagames.ro.
