Intro
Getting "Incompatible version" when you join a Valheim server? Here's what it means, and how to fix it.
What it means
It means your game and the server are on different versions. Usually one side updated after a patch, and the other didn't.
Vanilla fix
On a vanilla server, update the server to the current build, and restart it so it actually runs the new version. Then update your game, and rejoin.
Modded fix
On a modded server, every player needs the same mods at the same versions as the server. Use a mod manager like r2modman, and sync to the server's exact mod list, not just the latest.
Crossplay
Still rejected on the same version? Check crossplay. If the server's crossplay setting doesn't match how you connect, Steam or Game Pass, you can get the same error.
Prevention
To prevent it: announce updates, update the server first, then players. And pin your mod versions in one shared profile.
Recap
Same version, same mods, server first. Valheim hosting at esagames.ro.
