Fix FiveM CitizenFX Crash / Game Crashing on Join

A CitizenFX.exe or GTA5.exe crash when joining a FiveM server is almost always client-side — a corrupted cache, damaged game files, or a conflicting mod. Occasionally it is a bad streamed asset on one specific server. Here is the order that clears most crashes.

Clear the FiveM cache

A corrupted cache is the #1 cause. Delete the cache (keep your settings) and relaunch:

%localappdata%\FiveM\FiveM.app\data\cache
# delete the cache contents, then relaunch FiveM

Verify GTA V files

Damaged base-game files crash FiveM. Verify GTA V in Steam/Rockstar/Epic, and make sure singleplayer mods (menyoo, scripthook trainers) are removed — they break FiveM.

Crash on a specific server?

If it only crashes on one server, a streamed asset/resource there is the trigger. Rejoin after clearing cache; if it persists, it's server-side (a bad stream/model) and the owner needs to look at the console.

Read the crash code

The CitizenFX crash dialog shows a short reason (e.g. an asset name or memory error). That text often points straight at the resource or file to fix.

Clear cache, verify GTA V, remove singleplayer mods. If it's one server only, a streamed asset there is the cause.

Cause 4: an outdated FiveM build or GPU driver

An old FiveM version or outdated graphics drivers can crash on newer streamed content that a current build handles fine. Let FiveM finish its self-update on launch instead of force-closing it, and update your GPU driver from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel.

Cause 5: not enough RAM or VRAM for the resource pack

Some servers stream gigabytes of custom assets, textures and vehicles. On a machine with too little free RAM or VRAM, FiveM tends to crash rather than throttle gracefully. Close background apps before playing, and check the server's stated requirements if it advertises a heavy resource pack.

How to prevent FiveM crashes

  • Keep both FiveM and GTA V updated — do not skip FiveM's self-update.
  • Run a clean GTA V install with no singleplayer trainers or script hooks.
  • Clear the cache again after any major FiveM update.
  • Keep your GPU driver current, especially on servers with heavy custom content.
  • Avoid "FiveM mod menus" or cheats — they are a common crash and ban cause.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why does FiveM keep crashing when I join a server?

Most often a corrupted FiveM cache, damaged GTA V files, or a conflicting singleplayer mod. Clear the cache, verify GTA V, and remove trainers/menus. If it's one server only, a bad streamed asset there is the cause.

How do I clear the FiveM cache?

Delete the contents of %localappdata%\FiveM\FiveM.app\data\cache and relaunch. FiveM re-downloads what it needs, which fixes most crash and connect issues.

Do singleplayer mods affect FiveM?

Yes — script hooks, trainers and menus made for GTA V singleplayer can crash FiveM. Remove them (or use a clean GTA V install) before playing FiveM.

Does updating my GPU drivers really fix FiveM crashes?

Yes for a subset of crashes — FiveM leans on your GPU for streamed textures and effects, and an outdated driver can crash on content newer builds expect. Update to the latest driver and retry.

Can a FiveM mod menu or cheat cause crashes?

Yes, and it also risks a permanent ban. Third-party mod menus inject into the game process and commonly cause CitizenFX crashes, especially after a FiveM or game update. Remove them.

Why does FiveM only crash on one specific server?

That server is likely streaming a custom asset, model or script that conflicts with your setup or is corrupted. Clear your cache and rejoin; if it still crashes only there, report it to that server's admins with your crash log.
