Intro

High ping in CS2? Here's how to actually lower it — from the biggest fix to the smallest.

Nearby servers

First, play on servers close to you. In the game settings, lower the max acceptable matchmaking ping, so you're matched on nearby servers. Ping grows with distance. On community servers, pick one hosted close to you — for most of Europe, Frankfurt gives the lowest average ping.

Use a cable

Second, use a cable. Wi-Fi adds latency and jitter — Ethernet is the simplest, biggest fix.

Pause downloads

Third, pause downloads, streams and cloud sync on your network while you play — on every device.

Check the route

Fourth, check the route. If your ping is high to one server, run a WinMTR test to it. Loss, or a jump that starts at one hop, shows where the problem is. We have a video for that, too.

Set the rate

Fifth, open the console and set rate to 786432 — the highest value — so an old, low setting doesn't hold you back.

FPS vs ping

And remember: frames per second don't lower ping. Ping is the network path between you and the server.
