Intro

Here's how to connect to your VPS or dedicated server with SSH — from Windows, in under a minute.

What you need

You need three things: your server's IP address, the username — usually root — and the password. You'll find them in your welcome email, and in the client area, on your service's page.

Open Terminal

On Windows 10 or 11, SSH is built in. Right-click the Start button and open Terminal — or PowerShell. On a Mac or Linux, open the Terminal app.

Connect

Type: ssh root@ and your server's IP address. Then press Enter. The first time, it asks if you trust the server. Type yes, and press Enter.

The password

Now type your password. Nothing appears on the screen while you type — that's normal. Press Enter… and you're in.

If it fails

If your SSH port isn't 22, add -p and the port number. "Connection timed out"? Check the IP, the port, and the firewall. "Permission denied"? Check the username and the password. And if you're ever locked out, use the console in the client area.

Recap

Once you're in, start with security: SSH keys, and a firewall. You'll find a guide for each at esagames.ro.
