Game Server Security Checklist (Beyond Anti-DDoS)
Anti-DDoS keeps you online, but it is only one part of running a game server safely. Most communities that get wrecked are not taken down by a flood - they are undone by a weak password, an unpatched plugin or a missing backup. Here is a practical security checklist for game server owners.
1. Lock down admin access
Admin and RCON access is the keys to the kingdom. Treat it that way:
- Use long, unique passwords for the panel, RCON and any remote console.
- Enable two-factor authentication on your hosting panel and email.
- Give staff the least access they need, not blanket admin.
- Remove access immediately when someone leaves the team.
2. Protect the server IP
A leaked IP is the start of most attacks on small communities. Hand out a hostname, not the raw IP; keep sensitive services off shared addresses; and be careful with third-party tools that could expose it. See also how to find your server IP and port for the difference between what players need and what should stay private. If you do get hit, see is my server being DDoSed?
3. Keep everything updated
Out-of-date software is the most common way servers get compromised. Update the game server build, the panel, the OS and - especially - your mods and plugins. Known vulnerabilities in popular plugins are actively scanned for and exploited within days of disclosure.
4. Vet your mods and plugins
- Install only from reputable sources and active, maintained projects.
- Avoid cracked or "leaked" paid plugins - they are a classic malware vector.
- Remove plugins you no longer use; each one is extra attack surface.
- Read the permissions and configs so a plugin cannot do more than it should.
5. Back up - and test the backups
Backups are your insurance against everything - a bad update, a rogue admin, a corrupted world or a ransom demand. The rules are simple:
- Schedule automatic, regular backups.
- Keep several restore points, not just the latest.
- Store at least one copy off the live server.
- Actually test restoring one now and then, so you know it works.
6. Principle of least privilege everywhere
Whether it is database users, file permissions or in-game admin ranks, give each account the minimum it needs. If one account is ever compromised, least privilege limits how far the damage can spread.
7. Harden the box underneath the game
If you run your server on a VPS or dedicated box rather than a managed panel, the operating system itself needs the same care - locked-down SSH, a firewall and brute-force protection. See how to secure a Linux VPS and how to harden SSH for the server-level half of this checklist.
8. Keep DDoS protection on by default
Everything above protects the server's integrity; Anti-DDoS keeps it reachable. Make sure your host's filtering is always-on and not an add-on you have to enable mid-attack. See how our protection works and the broader protection guide.
Most servers are not lost to a terabit flood - they are lost to a reused password and no backup. Cover the basics first.
The quick checklist
- Strong, unique passwords + 2FA on panel and email.
- Least-privilege admin/RCON access; revoke it on departure.
- A hostname instead of the raw IP.
- Everything updated - game, panel, OS, plugins.
- Only trusted, maintained mods; remove unused ones.
- Automated, tested, off-server backups.
- Hardened OS underneath (SSH, firewall) if self-managed.
- Always-on Anti-DDoS.
Tick these and you have closed the doors attackers actually use. ESAGAMES handles the hosting side - a protected network, updated infrastructure and easy backups - so you can focus on the community.
A safer home for your server
Protected network, easy backups and a clean panel — host your community on infrastructure built for it.
