How to Protect Your Game Server From DDoS Attacks

28 May 2026 6 min read ESAGAMES Team

Game servers are the #1 target for DDoS attacks. The good news: with the right setup, an attack becomes a non-event. Here's what actually protects you — and what doesn't.

Why game servers get attacked

It's rarely random. The usual motives are rivalry (knocking a competing community offline), grudges (a banned player or ex-staff), extortion, or simply griefing during a wipe, match or event. Renting an attack costs a few dollars, so even small servers are targets.

What real protection looks like

You cannot out-bandwidth a modern botnet from a single server — terabit-scale traffic has to be absorbed before it reaches your machine. Real protection means:

  • Always-on filtering at the network edge, not a checkbox you flip mid-attack.
  • Multi-Tbps capacity to absorb large volumetric floods.
  • Multi-layer mitigation (L3/L4 volumetric, protocol, and L7 application attacks).
  • Low added latency, so protection doesn't cost you ping.

What you can do yourself

There are a few things on your side that help, though none replace edge filtering:

  • Hide your real IP — don't leak your server's origin IP; use the protected IP your host provides.
  • Don't share it in screenshots, configs or with people you don't trust.
  • Keep software updated and use sensible firewall rules.
  • Capture evidence during an attack (a tcpdump and a WinMTR) so your host can tune filtering fast.

What only your host can do

The heavy lifting — absorbing and filtering the attack traffic — can only happen upstream, on the host's network. That's why the single most important protection decision is choosing a host with real, always-on, multi-Tbps Anti-DDoS included by default.

You can hide and harden, but you can't absorb a terabit attack yourself. Pick a host that already does.

Every ESAGAMES game server is filtered through our own multi-Tbps Frankfurt network and custom in-house XDP mitigation — protection is on by default, on every plan.
