What Is Ping, and How Do You Lower It?

Ping is the number every gamer watches and few can fully explain. It is the difference between feeling connected and feeling like you are playing underwater. Here is what ping really is, what drives it up, and how to bring it down.

What is ping?

Ping (or latency) is the time it takes for a small piece of data to travel from your device to the server and back, measured in milliseconds. A ping of 20 ms feels instant; 150 ms feels sluggish; 250 ms and up makes fast games nearly unplayable. Lower is always better.

What actually causes high ping

Ping is dominated by a few factors, and distance is the big one:

  • Distance — data cannot beat the speed of light; a server on another continent will always have higher ping.
  • Hops & routing — every network a packet crosses adds delay; bad routing takes the long way round.
  • Congestion — an overloaded connection (yours or the server's) queues packets up.
  • Your local link — Wi-Fi, a busy home network or a weak connection all add jitter.

How players can lower ping

If your ping is high, work through the things you control first:

  • Use a wired connection instead of Wi-Fi where you can.
  • Close bandwidth-heavy apps and downloads running in the background.
  • Pick the closest server region the game offers.
  • Restart your router occasionally; rule out a failing connection.

If your ping is high on every server but a friend nearby is fine, the problem is local. If it is high only on one server, the problem is that server's location or routing.

How server owners lower ping for everyone

This is the half most guides ignore. As a server owner, the single biggest lever you have over your players' ping is where and how you host:

  • Host in a location central to your community — for Europe, that means a hub like Frankfurt.
  • Choose a provider with strong peering and routing, not just cheap bandwidth.
  • Make sure protection filters cleanly, so it is not adding latency or dropping good packets.
You cannot beat physics, but most high ping is not physics — it is distance and bad routing, and both are choices.

Ping is not the whole story

Low ping is necessary but not sufficient. Steady ping with low jitter matters as much as the raw number, and ping works alongside tick rate and netcode to decide how a game actually feels. Get all three right and the game feels instant; get ping wrong and nothing else can save it.

A central Frankfurt location and strong routing give EU players short, steady paths to your server.
